Stepwells, locally known as baolis, vavs, or pushkarnis, are wells or ponds in which water can be reached by descending a set of steps. These structures were primarily built in the arid regions of India, especially in Rajasthan and Gujarat, to provide water year-round and offer respite from the scorching heat.
